Starch ether is a water-soluble polymeric material derived from natural starches (such as corn, potato, or tapioca starch) through chemical modification (e.g., hydroxypropylation, carboxymethylation, or crosslinking). It typically appears as a white to off‑yellow powder. When dissolved in cold water, it forms a transparent or translucent viscous colloid and exhibits basic properties such as thickening, water retention, and suspension. Common starch ethers used in construction include hydroxypropyl starch ether and carboxymethyl starch ether.
In dry‑mix mortars (such as putties, tile adhesives, and plastering mortars), starch ether is primarily used as a thickener and water‑retaining agent. It significantly improves the workability and anti‑sagging performance of the mortar, preventing material slippage during thick‑layer application. It also works synergistically with cellulose ethers to extend the open time and enhance bond strength while reducing the risk of cracking. Furthermore, starch ether reduces segregation and bleeding of the mortar, resulting in a more uniform and stable paste. It is widely used in interior and exterior wall leveling, tile bonding, and thermal insulation systems.
