Gypsum retarder is an admixture added to gypsum-based materials to extend the working time by delaying the hydration process of hemihydrate gypsum. It is mainly used in various gypsum-based building materials such as plastering gypsum, bonding gypsum, joint filler, gypsum putty, gypsum-based self-leveling compounds, gypsum blocks, gypsum boards, and gypsum plastering mortars.
The core function of gypsum retarder is to control the setting and hardening rate of gypsum slurry, thereby extending the construction working window. Its mechanisms include: reducing the dissolution rate of hemihydrate gypsum, adsorbing retarding ions onto the surface of dihydrate gypsum crystals to form complexes that inhibit crystal growth, or forming a colloidal film on the crystal surface to hinder hydration. With proper addition, the setting time of gypsum can be extended from 5–20 minutes to several hours, meeting various construction requirements.
