Defoamers for construction are admixtures used in concrete and mortar to inhibit bubble formation and eliminate existing bubbles. Their mechanism of action involves reducing the surface tension of the system, rapidly spreading to the foam liquid film interface, disrupting its mechanical equilibrium, and causing the film to drain, thin, and ultimately collapse. Based on chemical composition, they can be classified into silicone-based, polyether-based, and mineral oil-based types. Mineral oil defoamers are widely used in building materials due to their lower cost.
Construction defoamers are mainly used in dry-mix mortars, concrete, and cement-based products such as self-leveling mortars, grouts, waterproofing mortars, and tile adhesives, to eliminate air bubbles introduced during mixing or application. Their core functions are to improve the compactness of the structure, reduce surface pinholes and hollowing, enhance impermeability and compressive strength, while also improving surface finish and construction efficiency.
